Abstract/Summary:
A growing mobile workforce, a greater reliance on network computing, and advances in portable computing technology make necessary a mobile internet protocol (IP) standard that will allow mobile devices to communicate with other devices, fixed or mobile. The next generation mobile phone using General Packet Radio Service wireless technology will use mobile IP. It is expected that the standard Mobile IPv6, being developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), will fall short of addressing the limitations in wireless mobility. This thesis defines a new mobility support protocol that addresses issues like high traffic overhead, high latency, and firewall restriction, which Mobile Ipv6 eventually will face. The protocol is an extension of Mobile Ipv6 and is independent of the physical medium. Based on the protocol, the thesis illustrates a new macro and micro mobility management paradigm for the wire and wireless network environments.
