Abstract/Summary:
A document database is a multimedia information system that contains textual information and other media components like images and video. Initial generations of document database were based on proprietary data format, which caused limited success largely due to their closed architecture. To increase their success, several standards have been proposed. This thesis studies a number of standards for document databases. We start with an overview of multimedia database characteristics. Then, we focus on current markup standards for document management like SGML and HyTime. Document data can be created, indexed and retrieved using these markup standards. HyTime provides a comprehensive set of primitives for composing hypermedia documents. We specified an entity-relationship model of SGML and XML to describe their features. We also discuss an overview of existing implementation strategies and architecture frameworks for implementation of document management systems. Finally, we have discussed some of the applications that currently use these standards.
