The primary purpose of this essay is threefold: (1) to familiarize the teacher and student of classical guitar with material already published that discusses the use of calisthenic exercises; (2) to document the potential benefits from these exercises for improvement of flexibility, coordination, relaxation, endurance, accuracy, and awareness in the prevention of injuries; and (3) to provide insight into the various physical and musical calisthenic exercises that the performer should use.; Exercises that served calisthenic functions were compiled from the following sources: Pujul's “Escuela Razonada de la Guitarra,” Carlevaro's “Serie Didactica para Guitarra,” lznaola's “Kitharoigus,” and Tennant's “ Pumping Nylon.”; A premise of this study is that careful use of calisthenic exercises Will greatly enhance a guitarist's development of technical facility without which true artistic expressiveness cannot be accomplished. |
