Abstract/Summary:
The trombone ensemble or trombone choir has become a core part of trombone curricula throughout universities and colleges since the mid-twentieth century. Despite a history dating back to the fifteenth century, most of the modern trombone ensemble's repertoire is from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Educators are tasked with finding repertoire to fill the gaps in the repertoire, often with composers and arrangers endeavoring to transcribe popular works from these missing periods. Transcribing or arranging important symphonic works for trombone ensemble can be used to reinforce stylistic elements inherit in those orchestral excerpts. With that aim, this essay will provide a complete transcription of the fourth movement of Brahms's Symphony No. 4 in E Minor, Op. 94.;To create this transcription, analysis of existing original works, instrumental transcriptions, and vocal transcriptions helps to provide evidence of the most common instrumental configurations as well as the availability and use of alto, soprano, and contrabass trombones in addition to the regularly used tenor and bass trombones. A discussion of existing transcriptions and arrangements of Brahms's works for trombone ensembles highlights techniques available when making transcriptions of these works for the collegiate trombone ensemble.;The final part of this essay is a commentary on challenges present when creating the transcription of the fourth movement of Brahms's Symphony No. 4. This commentary discusses the techniques in use by other transcribers of Brahms's music for trombone ensemble. At times, discussions of any concessions made when facing a challenge are presented, often with multiple possible solutions, including the one cogent for this particular work. A score of the entire transcription is provided at the end of the essay.
