As one of the most important composers of German and Austrian Romantic music in the second half of the 19th century,and he composed four symphonies in his lifetime.This thesis takes Symphony No.4 as the object of study,focusing on the composition techniques and specific stylistic features of this symphony,trying to reveal the new developments and breakthroughs in Brahms’ composition techniques through an indepth investigation of these two levels,and then describe the stylistic features and spiritual connotations of his compositions from a deeper level.This paper is divided into three chapters,in which the author conducts a comprehensive and in-depth study of the compositional techniques and stylistic characteristics of Brahms’ Fourth Symphony from different levels.The first chapter describes Brahms’ life and his symphonic composition;the second chapter systematically analyzes the musical structure,tonality,harmony,polyphony and orchestration of each movement of the symphony,and clarifies the main technical characteristics of the symphony;the third chapter explores the stylistic characteristics of the symphony on the basis of the symphonic composition techniques and elaborates them,including the classical flavor of the romantic trend in the content and form,the romantic spirit based on the classical tradition in the modal harmony and melody,and the inheritance and innovation of the cross-era musical style in the polyphony and orchestration;the conclusion is a summary and conclusion of the whole text based on the analysis of the above chapters,and makes an overall evaluation of the innovation of Brahms’ Symphony No.4 and elaborates on the historical status and artistic value of its symphonic music composition.
