Abstract/Summary:
This project investigates the philosophies, forms and practitioners involved in contemporary residential garden design in American and examines their possible sources of inspiration. The discussion begins with a review of the modern movement in American landscape architecture and garden design and includes a more focused investigation into the gardens of Dan Kiley and A.E. Bye, two eminent practitioners from this period. Through this examination we begin to discern how ideas and expressions from nature, natural processes, and gardens from the past can influence and inspire contemporary designers.;The design phase of the project allows for a personal exploration and expression of ideas and philosophies related to garden design for a property in Cazenovia, New York. The design addresses a postmodern residence located within a fifty acre rural and formerly agricultural site. This phase of the project is important because as landscape architects the formation of our own values and approaches to design is achieved through such explorations.
