With the further development of the reform and opening-up policies, cities in China sustained rapid development, and urbanization went through the primary stage and entered the middle stage in the current century. Rapid urbanization has brought enormous pressure to the ecological environment, social life, urban culture and energy. “Hanging garden” has been developed for its rational use of new energy materials and protection of ecological environment. Besides, “hanging gardens” are conducive to the promotion of urban culture and the users’ quality of life. In the contemporary China, the design of “hanging gardens”focuses on the protection of the ecological environment and the use of new energy materials, but pays relatively less importance to social life and city culture.City residential construction is an important part of the city. This paper focuses on the humanism of “hanging gardens” in city residential buildings in China. Through combining the knowledge of architectural and environmental science, psychology, culturology,sociology, art design, aesthetics and other disciplines, it expounds the necessity of integrating the concept of humanism into “hanging gardens”, and explores the principles,methods and significance of integrating humanism into “hanging gardens” in China’s urban residential buildings.The thesis first elaborates the background knowledge related to the rise of “hanging gardens”. Because the city principle in China has transformed from developing “functional city” to developing “cultural city”, culture has become the major force that influences all the other aspects of city development. Rapid urbanization leads to indifferent relationships between neighborhoods. After the analysis of traditional “courtyard”, this paper extends to the residential form of “hanging gardens”. By studying the development history of“hanging gardens” in China and abroad, the paper analyzes and summarizes the features of“hanging gardens” from the perspective of art design. This paper goes on to analyze“hanging gardens” in contemporary China from the view of design morphology, and arrives at a conclusion that the design concept of “hanging gardens” in China lackhumanism. Through the combination of sociology, aesthetics, culturology, psychology and other related disciplines, and according to different needs, the study integrates humanism into the design of city residential “hanging gardens” in contemporary China by the way of theme. Finally, the paper makes an application analysis to the humanistic design philosophy of city residential “hanging gardens” in China, so to promote the construction of contemporary city.
