Comprehensive research of the available distance education courses in landscape architecture offered by accredited institutions in the United States and Canada is presented. Current and planned course offerings, delivery modes, and pedagogical issues associated with the various modes are discussed. Results indicate that distance education is gaining acceptance within the profession of landscape architecture. No distance education degree programs, however, are currently offered in landscape architecture.;A freshman-level, general education course at Utah State University serves as a case study for online distance education delivery of a landscape architecture course and provides a prototype online application using WebCT as the delivery platform. The most challenging aspect to the course design and delivery was fostering interaction among students. Course surveys suggest students found the time flexibility of an online format important and most enjoyed the dynamic multimedia features incorporated into the course.
