In this paper, we attempt to outline the formation of coexistence patterns of landscape education in China since entering the urbanization development stage. With the educational activities, academic thought, discipline evolution as the vertical axis and the college and department construction, disciplines setting and distribution as the horizontal axis, the overall development of landscape education in China during the period from1978to2008is studied.In this study, the first-hand information about the landscape education resources is available through multiple channels. Based on this, the landscape education status quo is analyzed from four aspects:schools, college and department, discipline and major. Through an overall understanding of the existing condition, the development orientation of the landscape of education is clearly defined, to provide a factual basis to resolve the controversy of disciplines and professional areas. Besides, in this paper, in-depth investigation on the scale and existing condition of landscape art and design education is made, which enriches the research system of landscape education.This study is based on the review and summary of the development of landscape education in china from the perspective of macro social background. By following the experiences of landscape education status quo study and through understanding of the historical materials, the thirty years of development of landscape education is divided by stages and the historical law of the education phenomenon is elaborated. Studies show that, the coexistence landscape education pattern is the direct results of the reform of national education system and its root reason is the transformation of national economic structure, which fully reflect the demand change of the landscape education with the social and economic development.Since the reform and opening up, the connotations of landscape disciplines in China are not unified under the influence of the various theories and doctrines from western countries. In this paper, the changes phenomenon of landscape disciplines thoughts of the past30years since the reform and opening up is analyzed and the origin of the generation of various thoughts genres is traced back. Studies show that, the difference in the understanding of international landscape discipline system caused by the unique garden culture and different academic opinions of scholars in China is the reason for the divergence of the disciplines of Landscape Architecture and Landscape Design, etc..At the same time, the discipline landscape is also gradually differentiated under the influence of three times of discipline catalog adjustment and the name is changed for times. These names reflect the political ideology and are affected by various parties’interests. In this study, the formation, development and evolution process of the landscape discipline are elaborated in details, pointing out that the discipline differentiation situation will remain under the current education system.
