Abstract/Summary:
Ultra-wideband (UWB) is an emerging wireless technology that has recently gained much interest from the communication research and industry. UWB systems possess unique characteristics and capabilities that make them suitable for short-range, high-speed wireless communications.;In this thesis, we attempt to address the signal reception aspects of UWB system, particularly the channel estimation and data detection. In order to design the efficient and optimum UWB receiver, we have conducted a channel measurement campaign to study and analyze the UWB channels. The measurements were taken in a power controlled laboratory at TRLabs Calgary. Result analyses of the measured channel responses have led us to propose a digital correlative All-RAKE (ARAKE) receiver structure for UWB systems. The proposed ARAKE receiver employs a mean-based estimator which is efficient and simple to implement. This thesis presents the channel measurement campaigns, the channel analyses and the proposed receiver and estimator in detailed.
