Abstract/Summary:
In order for occupational therapy to be holistic, spirituality must be considered in assessment and intervention. Occupational therapists who want to assess spirituality need to turn to spirituality assessments created by other professions. This systematic literature review focuses on valid and reliable spirituality assessments and their potential use by occupational therapists. Included are eight spirituality assessments: Assessment of Spirituality and Religious Sentiments, Assessment of Spirituality and Religious Sentiments -- Short Form, Brief Multidimensional Measure of Religiousness/Spirituality, Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy: Spiritual Well-being, Spiritual Experience Index -- Revised, Spiritual Transcendence Scale, Spirituality Index of Well-being, and Spiritual Well-Being Scale. These were included because of their reliability, validity, and congruence with the definitions of spirituality and religion found in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process, Second Edition (AOTA, 2008). If occupational therapists are aware of which spirituality assessments are available, the knowledge may promote greater inclusion of spirituality in assessment and interventions, providing a more holistic approach to occupational therapy.;Key words: spirituality, religion, spirituality assessments, occupational therapy, reliability and validity, Occupational Therapy Practice Framework .
