A Report On The English To Chinese Interpreting Of Occupational Therapy

With increasing exchanges between China and the rest of the world,interpreting is playing an important role in intercultural communications.As more people join in the profession of interpreting in recent years,interpreters become more active in different areas,such as politics,economy,culture and science.Owing to the huge market,promoting interpreting has become a major task for China to explore the outside world and improve its comprehensive national strength.This report is based on the author's actual practice in a private clinic of rehabilitation for children with disabilities.The author worked as an interpreter for a foreign therapist in her consultation with the children's parents and treatment to children with disabilities.Vermeer's Skopos theory is the core of Germany functional translation theories.It focuses on different purposes and holds an idea that purpose decides strategies in translation.Occupational therapy has its clear purpose of treatment,hence the choice of Skopos theory conforms to the the task.During the practice,the interpreter completed the interpreting successfully under the guidance of Skopos theory.She also summarized the obstacles and effective strategies through listening to the recordings after every interpretation.From this practice,the author realized the diversity of an interpreter's roles.Interpretation is more than a communication in words but culture.Medical interpreting includes human care,hence the guidance of theory is important to achieve better quality.With the help of three important guiding rules under the Skopos theory,the author summarized some effective strategies to deal with the difficulties and obstacles in the interpreting process.It includes amplification,substitution,re-translation,paraphrase and enquiry.In the real-time and on-site interpreting tasks,interpreters often encounter problems such as insufficient knowledge storage and psychological barriers.In addition to strengthening theoretical learning,they should also strengthen the proficiency of interpreting skills and improve the knowledge system.It is hoped that the author's own experience and lessons can provide some theoretical support for the study of interpreting strategies and interpreting practice,and shed light on the study of medical interpreting.
