Abstract/Summary:
The current study of the impact of transformational grammar on foreign language teaching is an attempt to demonstrate the contribution of the Generative Transformational School of Grammar (TG) to modern foreign language teaching. It is built of four chapters. Chapters one and two provide a brief history of modern linguistics and the roles of the theory of language and the theory of learning in designing foreign language grammar courses. The contribution of TG to the teaching of foreign languages is treated in chapter three, by tracing the influence of Universal Grammar (UG) on shaping concepts of some foreign language specialists in determining the kind of grammar that they present to their students. Finally, it is concluded that TG has greatly influenced the teaching of foreign language, and proved to be more effective than the previous ones.
