Abstract/Summary:
This thesis examines the electrostatics of a microdroplet transported via electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD). In contrast with previous publications, this document details the charge density and electrostatic force distribution on the advancing and receding fluid faces, in addition to presenting simple algebraic formulae for the net force in terms of system parameters. Dependence of the force distribution and its integral on system geometry and material properties is described, with the EWOD force shown to depend on instantaneous droplet location. Theoretically and numerically obtained results in this thesis provide a clearer and more straightforward framework for understanding the underlying physics of the electrowetting phenomenon, as well as a basis for increased precision in the design and fabrication of practical EWOD devices.
