Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation focuses on several current and imminent network applications in which optical signal processing techniques have strong potentials in providing novel network functionalities. The thesis first presents a multiple-wavelength all-optical signal regeneration method, providing scalable and low cost solutions for long haul WDM networks. Then the majority of the thesis will focus on security applications and integration methods in optical CDMA networks.; CDMA technology has become one of the dominant technologies in wireless communications. Although there are significant differences between RF and optical domains, many of the benefits of RF wireless CDMA might apply to optical CDMA with the aid of novel signal processing using photonic devices. In particular, enhanced security properties of O-CDMA networks can be provided by incorporating optical layer XOR gating and optical steganography. The thesis also describe a cost-effective, robust photonic device technology with small footprint and multi-code processing capability that could significantly simply the node and system architecture, which are essential in commercial and military network applications.; In the last section, the thesis explore optical coding method which can also enable virtual I/Q multiplexing for phase modulated optical OFDM transmission, granting scalable access, and security add-ons in radio over fiber applications.
