Abstract/Summary:
This paper is an exploratory study that examined how traditional journalism is changing through the emergence of blogging by journalism professionals within news organizations. Two research methods were employed to understand the blogging phenomenon and the possible impact it is having on traditional journalism. This study analyzed content within blogs created by journalists and explored characteristics and features such as interactivity, which fosters interaction among audience members; hypertextuality , which allows for a network; and multimedia, for full dissemination of news stories.;This research also investigated the attitudes of journalism professionals toward the growing phenomenon of blogging and explored how they are integrating blogging into traditional journalism. It was found that journalism professionals in this study acknowledge that work roles have changed as far as gathering, reporting, and writing content, but their overall reaction to the impact of this change is mixed and inconclusive. Journalism professionals perceive that blogging affects their relationship with their audience because of interaction that was not possible with traditional media such as newspapers and television.
