Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this project was to develop a grant proposal to fund a program for Latino family caregivers of older adults with Alzheimer's disease or other related dementias. As part of the project, the grant writer explored potential funding sources in order to find a funding source that was best aligned with the goals and objectives of this project. ALMA Family Services, a non-profit agency in East Los Angeles, was selected as the host agency based on its geographic location, demographics, and desirability as a community partnership. The funding source chosen was the Archstone Foundation.; The literature confirms that Latino caregivers have unique experiences due to their sense of familism, family-centered caregiving, and underutilization of formal services. Furthermore, the underutilization of formal service has been linked to unmet needs for assistance and support, thereby potentially increasing caregiver strain and burden. The proposed program targets those Latinos who have not yet self-identified as a caregiver. In addition, the program will offer educational workshops, support groups and community resources. The objectives of this program are to increase knowledge and awareness of the important role of the caregiver, to increase satisfaction with the caregiving experience by the caregiver as well as the care recipient, and to mediate the strain and burden felt by the caregiver.
