Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this project is to utilize the existing lace collection belonging to the Family and Consumer Sciences department at California State University, Long Beach. The goals of this project include labeling the lace samples for proper identification, determining fiber content, identifying the design elements and lace making techniques, photographing the pieces for reference and detailed viewing, and building mounts to preserve and display the pieces. The sampling procedures for this study were intended to supply a thorough representation of all the usable and worthwhile pieces in the original collection, while preserving the best examples of lace from the collection. A data collection sheet was used to collect pertinent data. Materials used include the lace itself, magnifying and microscopic photographic equipment, a computer, matting materials (archival mat board, linen tape, and tissue paper) and archival boxes, and a number of lace history and lace making books for reference.
