With the development of reform and opening up and urbanization,China’s cities have experienced a long-term and rapid growth. However, with the emergence of the new normal of economy,China’s urbanization has entered the stage of 2.0.The urbanization process has slowed down, and even some cities have the phenomenon of population reduction. The challenges brought by the contraction cannot be ignored. Therefore,China, which is experiencing urban contraction at this stage, needs to pay attention to the phenomenon of urban contraction in the whole country and carry out the research of localization.Urban agglomerations are the main form of urban development in the future, and also an important measure in the new urbanization. The development goal of urban agglomerations is to coordinate the development of large and medium-sized cities and promote mutual development. The urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River has become a mega urban agglomeration permitted by the state under the background of new urbanization development. However,in the process of its development, some cities shrink. The research of this paper is to explore the motivation mechanism behind the urban contraction, find out the methods to solve the above problems in the construction of urban agglomerations in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, and put forward the policy suggestions for urban agglomerations to cope with the contraction. Therefore,by using the population data and economic and social data from 2000 to 2010 to 2018,this paper selects 31 cities in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River as the research object, identifies the urban contraction of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River urban agglomeration, analyzes the relationship between population, economy, industry and spatial factors and the degree of urban contraction, and divides the contraction mechanism of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River urban agglomeration Analysis. The structure of the article is as follows: the first chapter introduces the research background and significance, research content overview, research method, technical route and innovation of the paper;the second chapter combs the research history, research progress and research status of urban contraction concept, identification, contraction measurement and contraction motivation mechanism at home and abroad through literature retrieval and other methods from the perspective of literature review The third chapter uses the population data of 31 cities to identify the urban contraction of prefecture level cities and counties(districts);the fourth chapter classifies the urban contraction of urban agglomerations in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River from the perspective of the spatial distribution characteristics of population, and summarizes the contraction characteristics of all types of cities, which is the follow-up motivation mechanism research The fifth chapter is the empirical analysis of urban agglomeration and urban contraction factors in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. In the sixth chapter, the typical cases are selected to analyze the urban contraction mechanism, and the corresponding policy suggestions are put forward. In the seventh chapter, the conclusions and research prospects are made, and the conclusions are as follows:(1)the urban contraction of the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River mainly occurs in Hubei,a few in Hunan, and Jiangxi in Hubei From 2000 to 2018,it shows a relatively normal population flow;(2)based on the shrinking spatial structure, the types of urban contraction are divided into three categories: global urban contraction, marginal urban contraction and cross urban contraction;(3)from 2000 to 2010,industrial structure factors have a significant impact on urban contraction;from 2010 to 2018,population factors and industrial structure factors have a common effect on urban contraction The shrinkage of urban agglomerations in the middle reaches of the river has a significant impact.
