Export Complexity,Technological Complexity And Industrial Structure Upgrading Of Manufacturing Industry

The export complexity of manufacturing industry represents the export technology level of a country’s manufacturing industry,which is of great significance to the upgrading of the technological level and structure of manufacturing industry.The increase of export complexity increases the technological complexity of manufacturing industry through technology spillover effect,competition effect,industrial association effect and scale economy effect between export and non-export sectors,but these effects are distinct within countries(or regions).Furthermore,technological complexity of manufacturing industry impacts the upgrading of the structure of manufacturing industry,where the impact is related to the ratio of technological progress.Based on the provincial panel data of China from 2007 to 2016,this paper measured the export complexity of the provinces that eliminate the value of imported intermediates;and integrated the export complexity,technological complexity and industrial structure upgrade into a whole framework.Based on the intermediary mechanism test procedure,in the theoretical analysis and empirical test,the research begins with the effect of export complexity on the upgrading of the industrial structure of the manufacturing industry;and then specifically study the intermediary mechanism from export complexity to technological complexity,and then to the structure of manufacturing industry.Finally,it explains the results of the intermediary mechanism test and does further analysis.The research results show that:(1)the export complexity of China’s manufacturing industry shows the regional differentiation,where the eastern region taking the first place,followed by central and western regions;(2)the increase in export complexity significantly promotes the upgrading of the industrial structure of the manufacturing industry,but the regional situations are different,where the east are significant,but not for the central and western regions;(3)the intermediary mechanism effect of technological complexity of the manufacturing industry on the effect of exporting complexity on promoting the upgrading of the industrial structure is not significant,and the inspection process shows that export complexity does not significantly increase the technological complexity of the manufacturing industry,and the technological complexity has a negative impact on the upgrading of the industrial structure of the manufacturing industry;(4)the effect of export complexity on the technological complexity of manufacturing industry varies from region to region,where the east is significant,while the others are insignificant;(5)the reason why the technological complexity of the manufacturing industry inhibits the upgrading of the industrial structure may be that the technological progress rate of the middle technology manufacturing industry is higher than that of the high manufacturing industry in China.
