"To each according to one’s need" is the assumption of Marx’s principle of distribution in the advanced stage of future communist society and an important part of his theory of distribution and communism.By carefully studying the development of the thought of the "to each according to one’s need " it will be found that, since the sixteenth century, the utopian socialists have explored the "principle of distribution"—the principle of the ideal society. However, the "to each according to one’s need" described by the utopian socialists never jumps out of the fantasy circle.Until the nineteenth century, with the establishment of historical materialism and the discovery of surplus value,Marx realized the change of "to each according to one’s needs" from utopian to scientific. In Marx’s view,on the one hand, the emergence and satisfaction of human needs are constrained by productivity, and people can only create new needs in the context of meeting a need, which means that "to each according to one’s need" must not simply be interpreted as "to each according to one’s desire".On the other hand,as the highest level of need in Marx’s eyes, the needs of human all-round development and self-realization are the scales and standards of "to each according to one’s need".And " to each according to one’s need",as the principle of distribution in the advanced stage of communist society in the future,is the distribution of from each according to one’s ability, and compared with the first stage of the "distribution according to work" at the same time, also has a huge advantage. However, with the outbreak of some global problems, some views on"limited resources" and "limited production" have questioned the realization of Marx’s"to each according to one’s need".However, some of these questions do not pay attention to the great power of technological development, but also fragmented the relationship between human needs and social production. It can be said that Marx’s thought of "to each according to one’s need" withstood the test of the times. In the present China, the emergence of social problems makes the reform of distribution system and the construction of harmonious society face a series of challenges,Marx’s thought of "to each according to one’s need" becomes the key to deal with these challenges. It is of great significance to grasp the scientific connotation of Marx’s thought of "to each according to one’s need"accurately.
