In 2013,Chinese President Xi Jinping successively put forward the cooperation initiatives of “the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road”,referred to as “the Belt and Road Initiative”.Since “the Belt and Road Initiative” was put forward,it has been widely concerned by China's domestic and international community, and the achievements in economic, political, cultural and other fields have attracted much attention. Now,it has become a “business card”representing China's national image. This paper takes the Washington Post and the New York Times, two major American newspapers,as research objects to explore the reporting strategies of western media on “the Belt and Road Initiative” and the inspiration of the report. In this study,93 news reports and 86 news reports from two newspapers were obtained by keyword search, and the samples were quantified and qualitatively studied from the perspective of media domestication. The findings of this study are as follows: at first, the two major media in the United States have been domesticated to close the gap between “the Belt and Road Initiative” of China's diplomacy and the American audience.Secondly, this study outlines the coverage of“the Belt and Road Initiative” by the Washington Post and the New York Times from the dimensions of quantity, frequency and dimensions of news source, and reveals the macro differences between the two reports. Then, this study specifically studies and compares the domestication strategies of the two media for “the Belt and Road Initiative” reports from reporting theme, report tendency, discourse mode and domestication analysis. Finally,on the basis of a comprehensive comparison of the domestication strategies of the two major American newspapers, this paper explores the attitudes and views of the United States towards China's “belt and road initiative”,and explores how China can build a good international image in the international community.
