At present,China is in a stage of rapid and critical social transformation,where with all kinds of social contradictions being infinitely intensified,the survival stress of the people living in modern time is only increasing instead of decreasing.Therefore,those new media which show up in alternately under the banner of "entertainment,carnival,recreation" have been seen as the antidote that people scramble to get to escape the world and relieve the stress.Meanwhile,in order to cater to the preferences of some audiences,get higher click-through rate and attention,many media even spare no effort to employ the elements such as violence,death,pornography and the like to take up a large space of a whole page,and many things that should not be immersed in entertainment are taken for entertaining people.It is indicated by many facts that,at present,under the domination of the Internet,the degree of pan-entertainment of Chinese society and culture is even more serious than the American TV era which Postman had strongly criticized.Therefore,academic criticism of the "amusing ourselves to death" in China has been the heated subject in recent years,but Postman's research on criticizing the tendency of "amusing ourselves to death" brought by the development of electronic media to social culture by taking the American culture as the sample,with no in-depth investigation and analysis made on other countries,especially developing countries.Due to the existence of various differences in regional,social,historical and cultural backgrounds,the context in which the philosophy of "amusing ourselves to death" tends to take form in the United States is bound to be distinct from the current context in China in the political,economic and cultural sense.This requires researchers to pay attention to the context when they "apply the acquired Western knowledge to China".Therefore,the theoretical significance of this paper lies in the re-examination of Postman's proposition of "amusing ourselves to death" from the perspective of historicization,localization and nationalization,focusing on the context and trying to interpret the localized realistic proposition of "amusing ourselves to death"in China.Unlike the previous studies,which directly applied the "amusing ourselves to death" proposition to the existing situation of the development of Chinese popular culture.This paper starts from realistic proposition of the "amusing ourselves to death"to recognize the philosophy of "amusing ourselves to death",and then carries on the analysis on the localized application.At the same time,standing at the height of the development of information globalization,this paper explores the essential reasons for the emergence of "amusing ourselves to death" in China from the perspective of the inequality and asymmetry of the cultural exchanges and collisions.The author believes that the development of media's pan-entertainment emerged in China is only the representation of the problem.The deeper reason is the popularity of Western consumerism in China,which involves the penetration of Western culture.and Re-analysis and Reflection on the proposition of "amusing ourselves to death" is,to a certain extent,a positive resistance to the penetration of Western culture,which is conducive to alerting the world.In addition,the critical reflection on the proposition of"amusing ourselves to death" in the local reality in China,as well as the alerting enlightenment is of great significance in terms of guiding the academic and industry to be rationally aware with the correct development of mass media.At the same time,it is expected to provide a new research perspective for the study of promoting the healthy development of pan-entertainment culture industry in China.In order to discuss the applicable context of the proposition of "amusing ourselves to death" in a more comprehensive way,and to explore new explanatory propositions in the context with Chinese characteristics,this paper has been divided into four parts.The first part is the introduction.Including the research background,research significance,domestic and foreign research review,research ideas,research methods and innovations.The second part focuses on the basic connotation of the "amusing ourselves to death"proposition,and explores what Postman's "amusing ourselves to death" actually means.On this basis,starting from the realistic context of the proposition of "amusing ourselves to death",this paper analyses when,why and what problems it raised,then leads to the analysis of the specific social and cultural development background of the West at that time,and discusses the universal applicability of the proposition of"amusing ourselves to death" in the Western context.After defining the applicable context of the "amusing ourselves to death" proposition,the third part goes into the analysis of the explanatory effect of the "amusing ourselves to death" proposition in the Chinese native context.The adaptability and limitation are also discussed respectively.Finally,the fourth part is to reflect and summarize.We need not only a clear understanding of the current Chinese context of the abused "amusing ourselves to death" and the trend of cultural popularizing of "amusing ourselves to death",but also a vigilant understanding of the underlying causes of this situation.Because of the relative complexity of the national conditions,the "amusing ourselves to death" crisis we are facing is far more harmful to the culture than that in the American TV era in which Postman lived.Although it seems that the consumption of "amusing ourselves to death"in China has never really been able to escape the control of the political power.
