After Trump took office, under the guidance of the"fair trade"and "US first"policies, the United States introduced a variety of trade protectionist measures, such as tariff barriers, technical barriers, and intellectual property protection, which had a huge impact on the global free trade system.Especially on China's trade issues,Trump has repeatedly stated on public occasions and on personal social platforms that China's unfair trade practices have caused huge trade deficits to the United States, and China needs to be responsible for this. Therefore, from March 2018 to March 2019,China and the United States conducted a year-long trade dispute and confrontation. The incident, which once became a hot topic at home and abroad, not only attracted the general attention of the domestic people, but also received the attention and heated discussion of the international community. This article takes the"China-US Trade War"as the research object, and conducts in-depth research on this topic in combination with the reports of the two mainstream media in the United States-The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.Among them, the main research question is:What are the contents of the report, the position of the report, and the characteristics of the report on the"China-US Trade War" in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal? What is the difference between the two in the text content? What kind of reporting framework did they construct separately? What are the similarities and differences between the frameworks? What deep meaning is reflected behind the framework? The main research methods used in this paper are content analysis and framework analysis. The content of the two media's news texts from March 1st,2018 to February 25th,2019 will be analyzed, and samples will be taken at key points in the event. It is divided into three stages:"first round of confrontation period”,"continuous upgrading period" and"situation alleviating period".At the same time,Gamson's "interpretation package" theory is used to discuss the characteristics of each stage framework. This paper is mainly composed of three parts:introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction discusses the background of the topic and the significance of the topic and gives a brief overview of the causes of the"China-US trade war"and the main issues of the US media coverage in China. The text consists of four chapters:The first chapter sorts out the current research situation, and on this basis, proposes specific research arrangements from research methods, research ideas, research hypotheses, data sources and extraction. The second chapter makes a category construction and quantitative statistical analysis of 336 texts reported by the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal on the Sino-US trade war.The third chapter classifies and analyzes the framework of different stages of the sample. The fourth chapter compares the news reports of the two media, and compares the similarities and differences between the two in the framework construction, explores the deep meaning and internal logic behind the framework, and makes a descriptive summary from the content and framework. The study found that:The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal converge on the time-to-quantity of reporting;both focus on the subject matter of the event;the genre is mainly based on chat;in the source citation, the US source is in two The media accounted for the largest proportion;in the report position, the New York Times tends to be biased, and the Wall Street Journal reported a relatively balanced position;in the framework of the report, the two media have undergone dynamic changes in the process of frame construction.Specifically, the New York Times constructed"forced counterattack"-"firm self-defense"-"blocked compromise"framework, the Wall Street Journal constructed"China challenges the existing order"-"United States defends the existing order"-"China's retreat to the existing order"framework. But the New York Times is based on the concept of"fair trade",using reports that first convey emotions and describe facts. In the way,the Wall Street Journal is guided by the"first US policy"and uses the facts and viewpoints to reflect"China-US trade war."Both of them show the"China threat theory"and"Chinese original sin theory"under the"American dominates the world"approach.
