Since the beginning of the new century, the world has undergone tremendous changes. In order to adapt to the changes in development forms, countries have carried out educational reforms in succession. The basic education in our country also started the pace of reform, and the textbook as a part of the basic curriculum is bound to follow the pace of reform. After the Ministry of Education promulgated "The fine arts curriculum standards for compulsory education(2011 edition)",more than ten presses in China revised and adapted the original fine arts textbooks according to the new curriculum standards, which greatly improved the content quality and compilation level of the fine arts textbooks and made them suitable for the current fine arts teaching. Thanks to the increase of textbook writers, various fine art textbooks have their own characteristics, but at the same time, there are many problems and contradictions. In addition, the development of textbooks is a process of continuous change and advancing with the times. The art textbooks at this stage are not permanently suitable for art teaching. The compilation of the textbooks must be constantly improved and developed.Based on the above two points, through a complete and systematic study and comparison of two sets of elementary school art textbooks, published by Chinese People’s Fine Arts Publishing House and American Davis Publications Inc.,the author analyzes the similarities and differences of art textbooks for elementary schools in China and the United States.Finding out the problems existing in the compilation of art textbooks for elementary schools in China, and putting forward useful suggestions for the improvement of the textbooks, the author would like to make a contribution to promote the reform of basic education art curriculum in China. This study includes four parts. The first part mainly introduces the study background of art textbooks, the study status of art textbooks at home and abroad, the methods and characteristics adopted in this study, and the definition of relevant concepts of art textbooks. The second part analyzes and compares the current fine arts curriculum standards in China and the United States, and excavates the educational concepts, curriculum objectives and curriculum contents contained in the two countries’ fine arts curriculum standards, which has laid a theoretical foundation for the following comparison of fine arts textbooks in Chinese and American elementary schools. The third part is the key chapter of the study, which analyzes and compares the two sets of textbooks from four aspects:overall structure, content selection, column setting and illustrations, and finds out the problems still existing in the compilation of Chinese art textbooks. The last part is based on the results of the previous part to summarize,to extract the advantages from the American elementary school art textbooks worthy of reference, and to combine concepts and requirements of "The fine arts curriculum standards for compulsory education(2011 edition)".The following Suggestions are proposed for the compilation of China’s future elementary school art textbooks:1.Based on the concept of modern textbooks, optimize the system structure of textbooks2.Expand the elastic space of textbook content, and improve the comprehensiv-ess and exploration of the content3.To change the learning method as the goal, improve the column setting of the textbook4.Accurately screen the content of illustrations, improve the role of textbook illustrations...
