In recent years, many countries and regions have made autonomous learning ability one of the core literacy of students and the foundation for lifelong learning of students. It is especially important to cultivate students' autonomous learning ability early. The primary school stage is a key stage in cultivating students' autonomous learning ability. If primary school students can develop good autonomous learning habits, they will be helpful for future study and life.Considering that the cultivation of autonomous learning ability requires a process, through the low-grade and middle-grade primary school learning, the high-grade primary students have already had a certain understanding of autonomous learning, and can complete the reading and filling of the questionnaire independently. So the high-grade primary student's autonomous learning ability is the subject of investigation in this study. This paper focuses on three main issues surrounding the autonomous learning ability of high-grade primary students. The first is the status of autonomous learning ability of primary school students. The first is how is the status of autonomous learning ability of high-grade primary students? The second is what problems exist in the autonomous study of high-grade primary students? The third is to address the existing problems, what should be taken? This study used a self-edited questionnaire for autonomous learning ability of high-grade primary students.Questionnaire survey of 690 students from the fifth and sixth grades of four primary schools in Q City from the five dimensions of autonomous learning metacognition, learning motivation, learning strategy, will control and education guidance. At the same time, interviews were conducted with some students and teachers.Through the analysis of the collected data,it is found that: The overall level of autonomous learning ability of high-grade students in the four primary schools in Q City is good. With a strong sense of autonomous learning, they can also actively seek help from others in the face of difficulties. However, the motivation for autonomous learning is relatively weak, and the learning strategies are less mastered. The sixth-grade students have higher autonomous learning ability than the fifth-grade students.Girls' autonomous learning ability is higher than that of boys.Differences in the ability of autonomous learning among students in different schools. The educational level of parents also has an impact on the development of primary school students' autonomous learning ability.Based on the problems found in the above investigation, the reasons were analyzed. The reasons for the lack of students' autonomous learning ability are mainly as follows: First, teachers' understanding of students' autonomous learning ability is relatively one-sided;second,students' learning interest and self-efficacy are low;third, there are fewer autonomous learning strategies that students can use, this also reflects the inadequacy of teachers in teaching independent learning methods;fourth, teachers are not paying enough attention to the gender differences in students' autonomous learning;fifth, the educational level of parents restricts the development of students' autonomous learning ability. The corresponding countermeasures are proposed for the above problems,as follows:Teachers should develop students' autonomous learning ability in a targeted manner;teachers and parents should focus on cultivating students' interest in learning and enhance their self-efficacy by allowing students to experience success;teachers should strengthen guidance on students' autonomous learning strategies and methods;family and school need to work together to develop students' autonomous learning ability;teachers should pay attention to gender differences when cultivating students;in order to improve students' autonomous learning ability, parents should also improve their self-cultivation.
