In teaching Chinese as a second or foreign language, teaching listening is of great importance. With the number of foreign students learning Chinese increasing in recent years, the Chinese listening strategies have become the focus of researchers. This study was conducted under such a circumstance. It aims to investigate the use of listening strategies by foreign students in TJPU.The subjects involved in this study are 66 foreign students from the Tianjin Polytechnic University.Questionnaire and interview were used in the current study. The research questions are:(1)What is the status quo of foreign students' Chinese listening strategies?(2)What strategies are most and least frequently used by the students respectively? Are there any correlations among these listening strategies?(3)How do individual factors affect students'use of listening strategies in terms of gender, age, native language and the number of years to learn Chinese language? The study shows that most foreign students think listening to Chinese is difficult. The types of Chinese listening strategies they use include metacognitive strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, social strategies, and affective strategies.Among those listening strategies, social strategies are the most frequently used, while metacognitive strategies are the least frequently used. There is a significant high positive relationship among the five listening strategies. In terms of the correlation between Chinese listening strategies and other individual differences including gender, age, native language and the number of years to Chinese,it is found that there is no significant difference. In the final part, some implications were drawn from the findings in the hope of facilitating teaching Chinese as a second or foreign language in China and overseas.
