The Pavilion of Surging Waves is the earliest existing private garden in Suzhou.Being hailed as the four famous gardens in Suzhou together with the Lion Grove Garden, the Humble Administrator's Garden and the Lingering Garden, the Pavilion of SurgingWaves was first built during the Five Dynasties and became famous in the Northern SongDynasty. In the fifth year of Qingli in the Northern Song Dynasty(1045),Su Shunqin, who was banished to Wuzhong, occasionally saw the land abandoned by Sun Chengyou, who was the close relative of the Qian family, the royal lineage of the King of Wuyue.Hebought the land with 40,000 copper cash.He built a pavilion named "Surging Waves" andcalled himself as the old man of Surging Waves, which was taken from "The Songs ofChu-Old Fisherman" that "the water of the surging waves is clear, and it can be used towash my tassel;the water of the surging waves is turbid, and it can be used to wash myfeet."This undertaking also started the trend to arrange and name landscapes after theliterary quotation of the surging waves.Having gone through many dynasties, the Pavilionof Surging Waves now has a history of nearly one thousand years.Throughout theseyears, there were several changes of ownership, and there was no lack of men of literatureand writing expressing their pursuit and admiration with their poems and paintings.Thispaper has introduced the concepts, such as "ruins" and "monumentality",from Mr.WuHung's " Story of Ruins".Through methods, including reading ancient books and !literatures, visiting and interviewing scholars, analyzing image data, sketching andinvestigating on the spot and so on,the paper tries to sort out the historical context of thePavilion of Surging Waves. It strives to rip off the cover of history so as to restore aPavilion of Surging Waves, which is plump and authentic in space and in time.Byanalyzing how the landscape and the audience have been developing orderly anddisorderly, the paper differentiates and analyzes the relationship between the name and thereality of the Pavilion of Surging Waves. At the same time,it discusses the influence ofthe concept of "uins" on the development of the Pavilion of Surging Waves,as well asthe cultural meaning brought by the ups and downs of the Pavilion of Surging Waves inthe history and its inspiration for artistic creations.
