The Farmer is the first newspaper specifically published for farmers in China's history, and started to be published on March 1,1925 during the Rural Reconstruction Movement of Republican, which was a ten-day issue in the initial period, and changed to a weekly magazine from the seventh volume, and stopped publication on July 16,1932,and reissued on December 31,1934,and relocated intricately because of the war until the final issue. As a farmer's reading matter created by the Rural Education Department of the Chinese Civilians Education Promotion Association, the newspaper played an important role in farmer education, and its accumulated mass communication practical experience also had an important impact on the development of farmers' newspapers in China.Regarding The Farmer as an enlightening farmer's book, this thesis combines the idea of the Rural construction of the Chinese Civilians Education Promotion Association and the editorial team's idea of running a newspaper, and studies its understanding and image construction of farmers during the Republic of China. And with these to explores how the Farmer presented contradictions between "new" and "old" to traditional rural areas and transmitted knowledge elites' concept of rural modernization to ignorant farmers. What's more, this study analyzes the development and evolution of The Farmer itself, and whether there is a need for interaction between“doctors working in the countryside”and the underlying rural society behind this change. And this thesis also tries to probe into development situation of peasant newspapers and the relationship between newspapers and the society under the historical background and the call of national salvation. The first chapter mainly introduces the origin, research significance and purpose, methods and ideas and innovation points of this research, and related research review etc.,which makes a full demonstration of the research plan.In second chapter, the author introduced the background of the times as a whole, briefly explained the rural construction movement in the 1930 s,and introduced the founding purpose, development changes and column settings of The Farmer, and analyzed efforts and significance of the transformation of the newspaper from "rural educator" to the "farmers' mouthpiece",and focused on the group of moderators of The Farmer.Various positions of The Farmer were all held by members of the Chinese Civilians Education Promotion Association, who had a dual role: they were both inspired by Yan Yangchu and other rural construction leaders, and promoted ideas of rural construction to farmers readers through the newspaper. In the rural construction activities in Dingxian, their concept of running newspapers had been continually supplemented and developed. And this experiment in running newspapers had in turn promoted rural reform. The third and fourth chapters analyze characteristics and connotation of "old farmers" and "new farmers" presented by The Farmer through the analysis of the literature and documents of The Farmer(1925-1932),combining with concepts of the newspaper's colleagues, and induce its image construction method adopted by The Farmer as a new rural media in this process. The third chapter discusses that The Farmer used the "shame" narrative strategy to construct the "old farmer" image of "ignorant, poor, weak, and reveal private",and promote self-examination of farmers by revealing China's hardship and arduous circumstances of farmers. The fourth chapter follows the idea of the previous chapter, and further analyzes the image of the “new farmer” with the “knowledge, productivity, health, and solidarity” imagined by The Farmer colleagues. In the process of constructing the reverse value,The Farmer acted as the first farmers 'newspaper innovatively used the propaganda method of "establishing typical characters" to remind readers of qualities that modern farmers should have by shaping the improved ideals of the new era,and arouse farmers' consciousness of pragmatic development.Chapter five, based on the image construction of“old farmers” and “new farmers” from the first two chapters analyzes how The Farmer character from four dimensions:literature and art, livelihood, sanitary, and citizenship, and elaborate the peasant expression of highlighted in this process. The conclusion part is based on the background of the rural construction in the Republic of China, from the perspective of experimental newspapers, and summarizes how The Farmer constructed the image of peasants to achieve the ultimate goal of "creating new farmers".Andbased on the change from "rural educators" to "farmers' mouthpiece",this part also outlines the growth process of The Farmer as China's first farmer's newspaper, which should also reflect the two-way interactive relationship between "doctors working in the countryside" and the underlying rural society.
