Abstract/Summary:
The International Women's Day can be dated back to the beginning of women's movement for equal rights.During the Republic of China, women's emancipation thoughts were widely spread, and women's issue was considered to be important and socially significant. In 1924,in the context of the era of cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, the International Women's Day was officially introduced into China. The International Women's Day is not simply a celebration, but an important channel for spreading women's emancipation ideas and mobilizing women's movement. The media during the period of the Republic of China paid attention to this officially adopted new holiday. In the Kuomintang District, the Kuomintang official newspaper "Central Daily" and the private business newspaper "Shun Pao" provide the most representative reports on the International Women's Day.The two newspapers are both influential, but they have different backgrounds and they differ in the way they present issue on the pages of their publications. In this thesis I analyze the International Women's Day reports(1924-1945)in the "Central Daily" and "Shun Pao" and explore the women 's issue in the light of reporting“March 8th”,by examining the similarities and differences in the reports in two newspapers. The task of this research is to examine the media's attitude towards the International Women's Day and explore the differences during the time of the Republic of China.I aim at presenting a comprehensive outline of the International Women's Day media representation, and attempt to explore how the national historical process, women's emancipation and the newspaper's subjective consciousness have affected the media representation of the International Women's Day.The first chapter is an introduction, which explains the research origin, research purpose and significance of the thesis, and introduces the related research overview, research ideas and methods. The second chapter first explores the background of the International Women's Day and introduces several major debates about its origin in the academic world;then it studies the development of the International Women's Day,introduction into China against thebackground of the cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. Then I explore the International Women's Day as a cultural symbol of women's liberation, which is not only a banner to promote women's awakening, but also a tool used by the Kuomintang to control women's movements. Finally,I explore the close relation between the "Central Daily" and "Shun Pao" and the International Women's Day reports. In the third chapter I provide the studies of the Republic of China times and the media representation of the International Women's Day in "Central Daily" and "Shun Pao".The two newspapers echoed each other and were very concerned about the International Women's Day;actively tracing the history of the holiday and setting an example for new women to call for women's self-awareness awakening.During the War of Resistance against Japan, both newspapers were concerned about the national crisis. They used the International Women's Day to mobilize women. They reported on the progress and effectiveness of women ' s anti-Japanese war and published women's speeches to promote women's movement and emancipation. The goal was to emphasize the international unity against fascist aggression. The two newspapers have also become a frontline for women to share their views and share ideas, express their own demands and show their personalities. Finally,I found out that both newspapers obscured the original meaning of the International Women's Day to some extent and submitted to the nationality and male power. The fourth chapter is to explore the differences between the "Central Women's Day" and "Shenzhen" in the media representation of "Women's Day".First of all,the two newspapers attended to the Women 's Day in different ways."The Central Daily News" payed more attention to this issue. It has a large number of articles,a variety of genres, and often publishes commentary articles. It focuses on the importance of guiding public opinion;Shun Pao pays less attention to it,with fewer articles,a single genre and mostly short messages.Secondly, there is a significant difference in the degree of response of the two newspapers to the Kuomintang women's policies within the frame of the“Women's Day” reports. In different periods, the “Central Daily”mobilized women to participate in the political training movement, cultivated the spirit of motherhood, supporting “The new life movement” and creating the image of a good wife and a good mother. The "Declaration" of the Kuomintang's women's policy draws attention to the importance of the promotion of women's anti-Japanesewar and the national movement, but their response to “The new life movement” is cold. Finally, there are also differences in the discourse style. The "Central Daily" prefers ancient texts, with an official discourse style and strict discussion. The "Shenzhen" prefers vernacular style, which is straightforward, lively and simple. The fifth chapter investigates the reasons behind the differences and similarities in the International Women's Day reports in the "Central Daily" and "Shun Pao.The author believes that there are three reasons for many similarities being present. The first reason is that the basic function of newspapers and journals is to record facts and disseminate information, and news agencies have their specific textual characteristics standards and writing paradigm,so the reported news are often look the same. The second reason is that in the society, from ancient to modern times, when it comes to the painful periods of transition, the social consciousness of the old and the new is reflected in the newspapers. The third reason is that although women's emancipation faces many obstacles,it still profoundly affects the two newspapers' reports on the “Women's Day”.The author believes that the reason for the differences between the "Central Daily" and the " Shun Pao " Women's Day media representation is that the two newspapers have different positioning and ideology. The"Central Daily" as the mouthpiece of the Kuomintang adheres to the official ideology."Shun Pao" is a private business newspaper,so it is closer to folk popular culture.By investigating the similarities and differences of the International Women's Day reports in "Central Daily" and "Shun Pao" and exploring the reasons behind them,it is possible to create a possibility to restore the image of the International Women's Day in the media in the Republic of China times. The relation between women 's emancipation and political parties and women ' s movements in the Republic of China provided new perspectives and ideas.
