Since China joined the World Trade Organization in 2001,it has gradually become a big country of manufacturing with its advantages in population and resources. However, the long-term dependence on population and resource dividends will make China always confined to the middle or low end of the global value chain and unable to seek better development. Therefore,China must promote the upgrading of its manufacturing industry. In this context, the Chinese government has implemented the Made in China 2025,the first 10-year action plan of the Great-power Stratagem. The core of Made in China 2025 is to accelerate the innovation and development of China's manufacturing industry to improve quality and efficiency and to realize the transformation from a pure big manufacturing country to a great manufacturing power with good quality and quantity.Since its promulgation, the program has received extensive attention from the western media.By combining content analysis, text analysis, and social network analysis, this thesis studied the news coverage of "Made in China 2025" in three American mainstream news media and looked into the overall patterns of American mainstream media coverage on this issue,as well as the changes before and after ChinaUS trade friction. It has collected 297 articles from The New York Times,Wall Street Journal and Washington Post, spanning five years(2015-2019).The study found that there are 8 frame packages in the news coverage, including "Faustian bargain","Stockholm syndrome"," a new cold war of science and technology","self-defeating","new normal","big brother","order destroyer" and "globalization 2.0".Since the China-US trade friction broke out,the core frame package shifted from "Faustian bargain" to "a new cold war of science and technology",and the global context frame packages became more and more salient in addition to the persistent "big brother" frame. In terms of media network agenda setting,a total of 20 attributes including "intellectual property","market access" and "national security" were found.Although there are slight differences in the core attributes and cohesion subgroup before and after the China-U.S.trade friction, the attribute correlation network is on the whole similar. In general, against the background of China-U.S.trade friction, the mainstream media in the United States have such limitations as lack of multiple contexts, the stereotypical reporting and oversimplification of the attribution chain and the breakdown of the logic chain when they report on "made in China 2025".
