A Study On The Changes Of Editorial Discourse In The May 4th Movement Of The People's Daily(1949—2019)

It has always been a classic topic in the field of mass communication to comb and examine the development of social history with the change of media discourse.2019 is the 70 th anniversary of the founding of The People's Republic of China and the 100 th anniversary of the May 4th Movement.Standing at this node,it is of great value to review the changes of "May 4th" discourse in the media and consider the trajectory of China's modern social history.For a long time,the "May 4th" symbol has always played a role in the social mobilization of new China.At the same time,the official discourse system of our country also reconstructs and reinterprets the "May4th" in different stages according to the needs of national development.As a mainstream newspaper with the highest political standard in China,the People's Daily's “May 4th”editorial discourse construction has strong mainstream ideological color,distinct spirit of the times and extensive social influence.Therefore,based on Fairclough's three-dimensional research ideas of text analysis,discourse practice and social practice,this paper carries out relevant carding and exploration on the “May4th”editorial of the People's Daily.At the text level,it is found that the social hot words in the editorials of the“ May 4th ” Movement in different periods are basically synchronized with the characteristics of the times,and the high-frequency words highlight the characteristics of opposites,stages and internal consistency;the investigation of the modality system shows that the distribution of the three types of typical modal words has obvious characteristics of the times,and the emotional tendency is gradually gentle;from the wording and style,the editorials of the May 4th Movement in the people's daily are presented The study of style also shows that there are obvious differences between the30 years before reform and opening up and the 40 years after reform and opening up,that is,the wording of the first 30 years has gradually changed from "plain and straightforward" to "flamboyant and intense",the style of writing has gradually deviated from the nature of fighting to "Bang Bagu",and the editorial of the last 40 years has paid more attention to artistic rhetoric and speculative reasoning,and the level of article refining has greatly improved.From the perspective of discourse practice,it is found that the "May 4th" editorials of the People's Daily in different periods prominently express the two core themes of "revolution" and "construction".Then,through the analysis of the use of metaphor and the change of youth image,it is concluded that in the process of using war metaphor in ultra-high frequency to the diversified development and application of various metaphors,and the transformation of youth image from a single political revolution to a national fighter of the times,the "May 4th" editorials in different periods have completed the transformation from "revolutionary" discourse to "construction" discourse.Finally,based on the social and historical context of the two periods,this paper analyzes the structural reasons of the "May 4th" editorial discourse characteristics of the People's Daily in each period from the perspectives of ideology,social structure,media environment,social and cultural thoughts,and witnesses the two-way interactive process of the social history and the "May 4th" editorial discourse of the People's Daily in the past 70 years.In the in-depth study,it is found that the opposite ideological pattern,the inspection pattern of social structure of exclusive thinking(including the political closed social value system),the media pattern of monopoly and the prevalence of radicalism jointly formed the "May 4th" editorial discourse with profound meaning of "revolution" before the reform and opening up.Since the reform and opening up,the ideological field has gradually formed an integrated and pluralistic pattern(dominated by Marxism),the cognitive perspective of social structure has turned to openness and inclusiveness,the return of media subjectivity consciousness,the era variety of liberalism and cultural conservatism thoughts,etc.,which have promoted the new interpretation of the "May 4th" symbol in the transitional period,making the "May 4th" editorial discourse of the People's Daily It shows the renewed temperament of all things.
