Public Opinion Guidance Of Taoist Journals In The Context Of Chinese Salvation Movement

In the 1930s and 1940s,social and national crisis were intensified due to internal and external problems in China.Indigenous Taoism which is one of the three major religions(Confucianism,Buddhism,Taoism)faced serious religious crisis.In order to revive Taoism,The "Rewarding Goodness Bi-weekly Journal" founded by Chen Yingning,is the most famous Taoism publication in modern China.It was used to spread their thoughts that they advocated the promotion of Taoism to inherit and promote the traditional Chinese culture and save the country from danger.Starting from the contents of "Rewarding Goodness Bi-weekly Journal",this paper explores the basic laws and characteristics of daoist press's public opinion activities by studying the background,core propositions,public opinion guidance strategies and guidance effects of the journal.As a mass media,the purpose of newspapers and periodicals is to influence the public's thinking content and methods through conducting guidance activities of public opinion which includes agenda setting under a certain value orientation according to specific public opinion.In the early stage of "Rewarding Goodness Bi-weekly Journal",In setting the agenda,the journal kept up with changes in the current situation,raised high the great flag of patriotism,and called on the whole nation to unite and defend against foreign invasions.In guiding strategies,the journal used methods to stimulate the audience's emotions and change the audience's standpoints,such as science,innovation in religious theory,and psychological guidance.In interaction with readers,the journal focused on the acceptance of the audience,and sought the future of China and Taoism from profound traditional culture.Although the guiding activities of "Rewarding Goodness Bi-weekly Journal" have achieved obvious results,the publication failed to reconcile the activities of the three religions due to the fundamental conflicts between Taoism and Buddhism in value orientation,social function,cultural status,etc.After "Xianfo Judgment",the journal officially broke with Buddhism.From then on,it turned to a journal dedicating to promoting Taoism and Immortals.The speeches and guiding activities of "Rewarding Goodness Bi-weekly Journal"might be biased because of their religious nature,but most of them preserved traditional Chinese culture and social public interests.The willingness which it tried to promote the transformation of Taoism and display social function represented the patriotism of the new generation represented by Chen Yingning who devoted and protected the Taoism.In short,it's public opinion guidance activities accelerates the modernization of Taoism and have far-reaching social impacts and great historical significance.The study of the journal's public opinion guidance activities will help us to increase our understanding of Taoism and traditional Chinese culture,as well as the current religious work.
