A Comparative Study Of "China-US Phase One Trade Deal" Reports Under Frame Theory Between Chinese And American Mainstream Media

Since the beginning of "China-US Trade War",China and US have been undergoing 13 rounds of trade talks after 22 months.On January 15,2020,China and US signed the"Phase One Trade Deal" officially.The signing of "China-US Phase One Trade Deal"marks the beginning of new era which the two countries begin to have rational manner to resolve the trade conflicts through consultation and collaboration.The deal promotes the win-win outcomes and starts the new pattern of cooperation based on equality and mutual respect.The paper takes the news reports of CGTN and CNN on "China-US Phase One Trade Deal" covering from October 2019 to February 2020 as research samples.Based on the Frame Theory,the paper takes the quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze the report texts through data and content analysis.It makes a comparative study on the report contents,report positions and other language features through analyzing the report texts between the two mainstream media.Based on analyzing the factors affecting the report frames and understanding the choices and characteristics of frames,the features of report frames about the mainstream media in China and US can be reflected.The paper also examines the reasons behind the frame differences.The techniques and strategies of the two mainstream news media in international news production and communication are compared and referenced so as to know one from the other,which aims to create a favorable domestic and international public opinion environment for China and provide some suggestions for promoting the discourse dominance of China's international news communication.The paper is composed of five parts:The introduction part takes "China-US Trade War" and "China-US Phase One Trade Deal" as background,by introducing the research motive,significance,methods and research questions.The paper takes the Frame Theory as the theoretical basis.The second part is about literature review about "China-US Trade War" and "China-US Phase One Trade Deal" and proposes the reality needs with regard to the study of the news report.It presents the necessity of conducting the research on the frame of the deal.The third part includes the comparing and analysis of reports on"China-US Phase One Trade Deal" on CGTN and CNN.Taking the data and content analysis as the methods,the paper analyzes the report contents,report positions,report source and other language features form the micro perspective between the two mainstream media which lays the ground for further conclusion.The forth part makes the comparative study about the frames of the reports on "China-US Phase One Deal".The Conclusion part aims to analyze the reasons of the different contents and frames and looks forward to the future development of China's international news communication.The study found that the report position of CGTN is based on win-win cooperation and it has more objective and balanced coverage from the macro perspective.The perspectives of news coverage are diverse,but there is still a lack of a variety of voices.CNN has a wide range of news coverage and a variety of perspectives,and China's voice has been strengthened.The report position of CNN coverage tends to be more balanced,but there is still bias or negative coverage.Both CGTN and CNN hold cautious and optimistic attitudes and positions towards the deal,which reflect their concerns and uncertainty about the agreement.Both sides hold the view that the key lies in the implementation of "China-US Phase One Trade Deal".
