There is a growing interest in low-power and high-speed millimeter wave communication for a number of applications such as uncompressed high definition video streaming, mobile distributed computing, wireless gaming,Internet access, fast bulky file transfer, and etc.To meet the ever-increasing demand for wireless data traffic, the fifth-generation(5G)mobile communications are under intensive and extensive study. To what extent and in what capacity the 5G mobile communication will develop is determined by the degree of overcoming millimeter wave technical challenges. These challenges can be broadly classified into four categories: characterization of propagation channels, antenna technology, transceiver integration and digital signal processing. It is worth noting that antenna technology affects radio propagation channels, transceiver designs, and choice of digital modulation schemes in establishing a reliable millimeter wave link. Therefore, the development of antenna solutions for millimeter wave wireless communications has received considerable attention in recent years.Printed antennas have a variety of beneficial properties including mechanical durability, conformability, compactness and cheap manufacturing cost.As such, they have a range of applications in both the military and commercial sectors, and they are often incorporated into mobile radio communication.Patch antenna is one of the most commonly used printed antennas, but it suffers from narrow bandwidth.Stacked patch antenna was proposed with the advantages of the traditional patch atnenna and a broad bandwidth, application of stacked patch in communication system can promote system performance.Another promising one is microstrip grid array antenna, advantages of grid array can be concluded as high gain, broad bandwidth, simple feed and easy construction. This thesis is mainly focused on the design and application of millimeter wave printed antenna. It is mainly outlined as follows: First of all,the measurement of characteristics of antenna and the principle and related technologies of stacked patch and grid array are summarized.Secondly,45-degree polarized stacked patch antenna and arrays are designed for millimeter wave communication base station.Thirdly,a compact multi-beam antenna is designed for 60 GHz portable devices,it supports both broadside and end-fire radiations. Finally, application for microstrip grid array in millimeter wave micro base stations is presented. It is configured to radiate 45° polarized waves in 28-GHz band, the performance of the 45° microstrip grid array is simulated and measured with emphasis given to its integration on a larger grounded substrate that mock-ups a micro base station.
