There are so many advantages about microstrip patch antenna, for example low profile, simple structure, small volume, light weight, easy fabrication, low cost and conformal with carrier and so on, therefore it is widely applied and researched in the modern mobile communication.In this paper, first of all we propose a novel slotted microstrip patch antenna, of which slotted structures we design are etched in the radiated patch and ground plane. Then the slotted microstrip patch antenna and original microstrip patch antenna are simulated and measured respectively, the results of simulation and testing are excellent agreement. The working bandwidth of the slotted microstrip patch antenna is about nine times wider and the gain is1.4dB higher than that of original microstrip patch antenna at the resonant frequency, it is show that the slotted microstrip patch antenna has broadband, high gain, narrower beam width, better directivity. The far field radiating direction is in the parallel plane of the proposed antenna, which is different from conventional microstrip patch antenna, which radiates perpendicular to the antenna plane.At the same time, the cell structure of slotted microstrip patch antenna is simulated and analyzed; we find that the cell structure is bandpass at the working frequency of the proposed antenna. By analyzing the gap width of radiated patch, ground plane and the thickness as well as relative permittivity of dielectric substrate, we carefully research these factors. Consequently, the slotted microstrip patch antenna has an advantage for some practical applications.Finally, we use the slotted microstrip patch antenna as array element, a two by two plane slotted microstrip patch antenna array and a four-element linear slotted microstrip patch antenna array are also designed, we discuss that the gains of these slotted microstrip patch antenna arrays vary with the distance between two adjacent microstrip patch antenna elements respectively.
