Along with the development of information technology, it is required strongly that people can communicate with any other person on anything ,including data, audio and video without considering location or time, and the basic station is expected to be mobile and vagile in the network. One of the key technologies to realize the mobile network is Wireless Local Area Network, WLAN. And Hiper LAN is an important standard of WLAN.Microstrip patch antenna is the typical and common microstrip antenna format which has the advantages of filmy section, small scale, light weight and possibility to conform with the carrier, and it is convenient to integrate such antenna with active components to form single module for its plane structure, additionally, it is easy to be manufactured and processed with low cost. Microstrip antennas with same structure can be combined to form microstrip antenna array for higher gain and broader bandwidth. Because of the advantages of microstrip antenna, the microstrip antenna array is used more and more to design transceiver in wireless communication system. Therefore, it is important to research on microstrip antenna design applied in WLAN.This paper introduces microstrip antenna radiation mechanism at first, including transmission line theory, cavity modeling theory, integral equation method microstrip antenna theory and antenna array theory, and all of them are the design basic of microstrip antenna array. The numerical methods used in microstrip antenna design will be introduced at the third chapter, and there we mainly discuss theory, key things and advantages of the finite difference time domain method applied to this paper. In chapter four, we discuss the general situation of antenna applied in WLAN; considering the conditions and demands of WLAN application as well as the shortcoming of current design, this chapter proposes the main task of this paper, which gives the demand for design in next chapter. In chapter five, we focus on the designing process and the simulation of the antenna element and the antenna array. The outputs of the simulation indicate that the design in this paper meets the requirements well, and it has many improvements as listed below on key points comparing with the current designs.1. The peak radiation direction of the improved four-element antenna array in this paper is at around 50°elevation, which means that the design satisfies the demand of the peak radiation direction quite well.2. The Omni-direction of the antenna pattern of the improved four-element antenna array in this paper is better. In the horizontal plane, the antenna pattern of the four- element antenna array is almost a circle, which meets the requirements well.In the light of this paper, increasing the number of the antenna array elements and designing antenna element of different forms will lead to a better implementation.
