Research On The Coverage About China On The New York Times' Offical Website In Trump's Era

Trump took office as President of the United States in 2017,and the relationship between China and the United States has entered a new era.As the representative of the mainstream media in the United States,during Trump's era,the New York Times has always been the important position of coverage on China.This paper takes the New York Times as the research object.Firstly,it can accurately grasp the characteristics and trends of coverage on China in the mainstream media of the United States during Trump's era,secondly,it can analyze the image of China.Therefore,the study of coverage on China in the New York Times has great significance for China to establish a correct and positive national image and to meet the challenges of international public opinion.Under this background,this paper chooses 483 coverages on China from the official website of the New York Times from 2017 to 2018 as research samples,with using the content analysis.At the macro level,this paper summarizes the general characteristics and trends of coverage on China from the number,genre and topics of reports.At the micro level,the characteristics of news texts are analyzed from the aspects of headlines,quotations,data and words,so that grasp the way of news discourse in coverages on China,and summarizing the image of China in it.Finally,the following conclusions are drawn: Negative coverage on China of the New York Times still account for the majority,which mainly focusing on political and economic fields.News discourse pays attention to conflict,and its image of China is biased and inconsistent with reality.On the other hand,the New York Times has increased its positive coverage on China,and generally agrees with China in the fields of environmental governance,scientific and technologicalinnovation etc.Its reporting principles focus on objectivity and fairness.Finally,the author puts forward some suggestions on those coverages of the New York Times based on the above findings,in order to provide ideas for future research.
