Common Sense is a supplement published by Shanghai old newspaper Shun Pao on June 1st,1920,and the final issue on March 24 th,1927.On the one hand, the establishment of Common Sense is closely related to the social thoughts at that time.On the other hand,it is also in line with the business philosophy of Shun Pao in that period. The supplement was presided over by Yang Yinhang,an intellectual who studying abroad. He was deeply influenced by the revolutionary and Western bourgeois ideology during his study abroad, and his thoughts also profoundly affected the content of the supplement.Common Sense accompanied the climax of the May 4th New Culture Movement to send out the strong voice of the era of “conservation”,to spread the basic common sense of morality, law, economy, health, etc.,in response to the demands of the society to shape “New People”.In view of the previous literature, the research on the Shun Pao is mainly based on macro perspectives, but the micro level, especially the research on the content of social enlightenment and salvation, needs to be enriched. This paper attempts to use the supplement Common Sense as the starting point, interpreting it from the perspective of ideological evolution and cultural enlightenment, and exploring the real appeals and reasons behind the publication of the journal. This paper will use the literature research method, taking Common Sense as the research object, through the deep interpretation and analysis of its main content, trying to combine the social and historical background, and dialyzing the social mission and responsibility of the advanced intellectuals at that time to explore the road to saving the country. The main part of the thesis is divided into four chapters: The first chapter is the introduction of the social background, the host and the main columns of Common Sense. The second chapter takes the supplement as the research object, summarizes the main contents of Common Sense from four aspects of morality, law, economy and health, and analyzes the characteristics of the publication in the content. In the third chapter, based on the introduction and analysis of the contents of the supplement, attempts to find the true appeal of the establishment of Common Sense ——The study found that the core of the founding of Common Sense is to shape the “New People” and transform the national character, which is embodied in three aspects: opening the people's wisdom, inspiring the people's strength, and establishing the people's morality. The fourth chapter starts from the development of the “New People” Thought and the social background of the publication of Common Sense, and explores the reasons of the appeal. After combing the analysis, the paper argues that Common Sense at that time proposed to shape the “New People” is an inevitable requirement of historical development.More importantly,it reflects the evolution of the intellectual twists of Chinese intellectuals from another perspective.
