Chinese Network Media Rent-Seeking And Governance

As the fight against internet disorder goes on,the phenomenon of network media rent-seeking gradually surfaces.Network media rent-seeking refers to the behavior or activity that seeks personally gains through internet media by taking advantage of being in power and damages the public interest.With the increasing influence of internet,network media rent-seeking is becoming more and more common.Based on public data,this paper analyzes 204 cases of network media rent-seeking,presenting its distribution,characteristics and rules.The research finds that network media rent-seeking activities in China have developed with the development of Chinese internet industry.Compared with traditional media rent-seeking,network media rent-seeking has more diverse agents.In terms of rent-seeking means,apart from traditional paid news,paid silence and blackmail,network media rent-seeking could also involve post deletion,illegal activities in public relations and paid bid ranking.With the development of "we media",it is also common to see rent-seeking in “we media” public accounts.Due to the relatively low threshold of network media,its large quantity and high transmission speed,different subjects of interest compete fiercely for bigger influence on network media,which results in huge rent and rent-seeking behavior.The increasingly fierce network media rent-seeking not only endangers the public interest and credibility of media,but also disturbs normal economic order in the market,which could cause a waste and mismatch of social resources.Though relevant departments of the state have taken various measures such as special actions to solve the problem of rent-seeking and they do have some effects,we still need some solutions that better suit this problem and can fundamentally tackle it.Considering the external environment,this paper analyzes the subject and object of network media rent-seeking,and puts forward suggestions and solutions from the aspects of law,market and government regulations.It is hoped that a structure of coordination from the top to the bottom of the system can be established to solve network media rent-seeking problem.,and thus rebuild the credibility of network media and create a clear space for the virtual network world.
