With the processor performance continues to improve, the processor power consumption, local power density also will continue to improve.Power density not only brings the packaging, cooling problems,he also brings the problem of reliability, with the temperature rise, the failure rate index growth, the speed slows down, and the leakage increases. For a variety of applications,SoC power consumption is the important factors to increase product performance, increase the market share. This paper will study and implement low power design based on open source AO486 processor system.According to the characteristics of the processor module,UPF low-power design process would been introduced for multi-voltage domain design. So in the phase of RTL design the power management strategy would be parallelly verified and analyzed.Processor system power management combined with the industry ACPI standard,so that the design of the hardware is better supported by the current OS.The PMU module conforming to the system power consumption management strategy is analyzed, and the low power consumption cell is effectively managed during the power state switching process. The power state management strategy of the paper has been verified under VCS MVSIM-native mode. The paper will also introduce DVFS technology to AO486 processor system power management.Based on the actual processing of the software,OS can choose the optimal performace state to achieve the best energy consumption.Power consumption analysis with the Power compiler tool, the minimum performance of the operating state can save the dynamic power.Simulation results show that compared to the P1 performance operating state, the power consumption at the P2 performance operating point is reduced by 15%,the power consumption at the P3 performance operating point is reduced by 28%,and the power consumption at the P4 performance operating point is reduced by 49%.The low-power design method of the subject research can be applied to low-power design for domestic x86 CPUs.
