Pop culture is increasingly dominant in today's consumer society.Cultural programme thus faces tremendous challenge with the growing popularity of entertainment programme.In recent years,cultural programme has made a return,with hot television shows like “Let the World Hear Me”,“The Reader” and “Classics Forever”,or radio programmes like “The Stage of China”,“Listen to the Chinese Classics” and “992 Reading Meeting”,just to name a few.They have attracted great attention and discussion and led cultural programmes to culmination.For a long time,cultural programme has been perceived as “niche”,and watched by only a small number of people.But it's an indispensable genre in radio and television programmes as it helps promoting traditional culture and enlightening the public.Hence it is critical to explore how to take cultural programme from “niche market” to “mass market”.This dissertation starts with an overview of cultural programme,elaborates on the new trends of development and their significance,and explores means of popularisation with real examples.As constant innovation of forms plays an important role in the popularisation,the second chapter focuses on the design strategies in modern radio cultural programme.Radio broadcasting is the art of sound-its elements include language,music and audio.Innovative utilisation of modern sound elements can effectively add beauty to the programme.Interaction has always been a useful approach to connect cultural programme with its audience.The fast-evolving Internet has provided more channels for real-time interaction.In recent years,story-telling narrative is one of the new trends.Incorporating this approach in cultural programme will meet the demands of the audience,and in turn contribute to its expansion.Lastly,this dissertation uses radio cultural programme “Culture Gallery-Chinese Debate over 25 Years” as a case study and analyses its design and strategies.In summary,by studying cultural programme on radio and television,this dissertation aims to provide more insights for its popularisation in the new era.
