Application Of Ethnic Culture Elements In Indie Games

Nowadays,applying ethnic culture elements in video games is more and more common.It shows that game developers pay more and more attention to expand video games' cultural space.Indie game is a video game genre which is considered to be most artistic and innovative.If indie game draw inspiration and nutrients from ethnic culture,create works with traditional aesthetic and cultural conception,then these games will have a broader culture developing space.In recent years,some indie games with ethnic culture have obtained good rating score and game awards.These works absorb ethnic cultural resource,using original material to re-creation,successfully archived cultural and artistic value.This paper choose three representative cases,using methods such as case study,literature study and practice design,to discuss how to design indie game with ethnic culture,and domestic indie game's future development.First of all,analyzes the influence of ethnic culture on the subtle influence to indie game developers from the three aspects,theme,aesthetics and ideology.Second,through case study,analyzes the feature of applying ethnic cultural elements into indie games from four aspects,character design,scene design,how to play and theme.Then combined with video game develop process,to design an indie game case.Consequently,the writer draws the conclusion that the key to combine indie game and ethnic culture is how to express the ethnic cultural spirit.Visual design is the main aspect which catch players' attention,it should be designed referring cultural heritage in reality.Game role and game play is video game's unique way to narrate and express,it should be designed with ethnic culture knowledge and metaphor.In the background that indie game has become a new commercial hot spot,the development of future indie game should realize video games' potentiality to express and propagate information.Developers should regard indie game as an artistic form,and try to make positive social influence in the area of culture,art and education.
