In the multiple contexts of modernity,globalization and consumer society,urban identity has gradually presented a new look-the integration with the cultural and creative industries has become increasingly close.In this process,a symbolic cultural entity has gradually formed that the government has created cultural landmarks through the deployment of resources.The Eslite Bookstore in Suzhou Industrial Park(SIP)is one of the cases.Therefore,this article will take it as an example to explore "how did cultural landmarks construct urban identity in the process of display".As a result,the study found that Eslite's physical space has formed a middle-class lifestyle as well as aesthetic style through a series of operations,thus separating from other bookstores and helping the industrial park to establish a modern city.And through the display of spatial layout,architectural design and cultural activities,Suzhou Eslite has explored a way of cross-border management,accumulated certain brand assets and commercial profits,and also constructed a multiple subjects' urban identity with subtle relationships.This paper is divided into three parts:The first part is the background introduction,expounding the history of Suzhou City and its historical status in China.In addition,it also analyzed the development status of Eslite Bookstore including how Eslite Bookstore stands out from many physical bookstores and becomes the first to none.What's more,the"cultural landmark" was heavily introduced by the government into the Suzhou Industrial Park;the second part is the main part of the article.The paper explored how Suzhou Eslite can be separated from other physical bookstores through the cultural display and build urban identity of Suzhou Industrial Park in these three aspects:architectural style,merchandise display,and curatorial activities.In this process,a variety of display designs played a vital role in accelerating and spreading the cognition of Suzhou Eslite's middle-class lifestyle aesthetics in the public mind,consolidating the cultural creative brand's status,constructing urban identity of modernity,and acquiring commercial profits.In addition,customers' involvement has changed the meaning of urban identity in the early planning and design of Suzhou Eslite,adding a new connotation on the basis of the original.The third part is the extension and in-depth discussion of the main part of the article.With the brand assets and commercial profits accumulated by Eslite becoming more and more abundant,the higher reputation of cultural landmarks,the greater influence and the wider range of crowd,it is possible to obtain more subjects' recognition of the city.Through various methods,Suzhou Eslite has product contemporary visitability,which not only conveys the identity of the modern new city,but also gains a certain identity and status.As a cultural landmark,Suzhou Eslite is accompanied by the diversity,differences and negotiation of urban identity in the process of cultural display,transmission,shaping and guidance,which is implying the loss of authenticity.Therefore,there is a dynamic balance between the display of cultural landmarks and urban identity.This paper hopes to provide new experiences and ideas for the study of urban communication and urban identity through the analysis and discussion of the above contents.
