With the rise of China,China's national image has gradually entered the people's field of vision.As an important source of overseas people's perception of China's national image,the image of mainland tourists in the news reports plays an important role.However,in reality,overseas media reports on mainland tourists are not all objective,true and comprehensive,but there are single,one-sided and stereotyped reporting models and reporting frameworks that do not reflect the full picture of mainland tourists.Whether the image of mainland tourists constructed by the media is consistent with the true image of mainland tourists is not only an important criterion for judging whether the media is objective and fair,but also plays a key role in the correct understanding between the two peoples and China's image and status in the international arena.Starting from the perspective of constructivism,this paper combines the media image of mainland tourists with the theory of communication,and selects a representative English-language paper-based media in Hong Kong,the South China Morning Post,To sort out its reports on mainland Chinese tourists from 1997 to 2017 for a total of 20 years.This paper uses content analysis and text analysis to quantify statistics from eight aspects: the number of reports,the length of the report,the genre of the report,the subject of the report,the tendency of the report,the source of the news,the analysis of the keywords,and the way in which the report is quoted.At the same time,using qualitative research methods to analyze the text of specific reports to examine what kind of mainland tourists' image has been constructed by Hong Kong mainstream media to the Hong Kong people,and whether it truly reflects the overall picture of mainland tourists.The study found that the characteristics of mainland tourists constructed by the South China Morning Post are mainly reflected in the following aspects: the promoter of economic development,the victims of overseas tourism,the perpetrators of crimes,the makers of contradictions and disputes,the destroyers of the social environment,and the neglect of the cultural order.Besides,this article also sums up six factors thatinfluence the construction of media images of mainland tourists from both subjective and objective aspects: the reasons for mainland tourists themselves,the proliferation of media commercialism,the drive of audience's psychology,the influence of cultural differences between the two places,the poor publicity and imperfect rules and regulations.Finally,the corresponding solutions are proposed in a targeted manner: improving the quality of mainland tourists,adhering to objective and balanced reporting,improving the media literacy of audiences,strengthening exchanges and interactions between the two places,strengthening external publicity,establishing a long-term mechanism to provide suggestions and inspiration for the rational construction of the media image of Chinese tourists in the future.
