Frontier Landscape And Discourse Construction:the Analysis On The Reports Of Xishuangbanna In People's Daily

Media are the recorders and writers for social change which not only reflect the social change,but also participate in the construction of social reality.With the development of society,Xishuangbanna described in People's Daily as a"barren and primitive land"suddenly changed its identity and became the"emerald in the desert".With the special discourse mode,People's Daily constructed medium pictures of Xishuangbanna in different times for audiences.Based on the theoretical perspective of the medium construction theory and constructive discourse concept,in the study,the writer made diachronic investigation for 266 news reports about Xishuangbanna in People's Daily from 1953 to 2018.On microcosmic level,from two aspects,discourse text and discourse strategy,the textual characteristic and discourse strategy were discussed;on intermediate level,discourse frameworks in the reports were refined to show the change path of the six frames which waned and waxed in turn;on macroscopic level,the analysis on social factors and medium factors were made.Finally,the writer investigated and researched how media can construct various frontier pictures in different historical periods with special discourse construction mode,under the double influences of social factors and medium factors.Research showed in the past 69 years,the number of the report about xishuangbanna in newspapers had a tortuous development trend on the whole.Report topics mainly focused on the varieties of people's livelihood and ecological resource protection and news was the main reporting genre with excellent pictures and essays.Most viewpoints were positive and neutral and the negative tendency was relatively less.The discourse pattern of "duality narrative"always constructs flourish frontier pictures for readers,while the discourse rhetoric constructs the"frontier imagination"beyond the text itself.The six discourse frameworks competed with each other and they waned and waxed in different times.Finally,under the double influences of social factors and medium factors,the discourse text and discourse framework constructed different frontier pictures of Xishuangbanna which appeared in People's Daily from 1953 to 2018.However,change is only partial and unchangeable is the mainstream.As the core of political discourse practice and national ideology,"development and stability" has always shaped the changed and unchanged landscape of Xishuangbanna frontier in the past 69 years.
