Research On Image-narration Of The Illustrated London News In The Late Qing Dynasty

In 1842,British Herbert Ingram founded the world's first image weekly The Illustrated London News,which features images as the main content.The transfer printing technology was not mature in the 19 th century to early 20 th century.The weekly magazine reproduced major events around the world quickly and intuitively with its groundbreaking reporting style.It also detailed the rich social sections of China in the late Qing dynasty.This study is mainly based on two aspects: one is the particularity of the content in the text.The Illustrated London News depicted a picture of the late Qing dynasty from the perspective of the outside world.In modern China,the national construction and national shaping is a mixture of modernity and the tradition of taking the oath of itself.The study of western China in this period can get the viewpoints missing from the traditional memory.The second is the particularity of the form in the text.In the19 th century,The Illustrated London News combined the woodcut printmaking with the news,and the richness of the narrative method increased the readers' interest in reading and the feasibility of the narration.In this paper,text analysis is adopted.It is supported by the study of narrative science.In the meantime,it also refers to the theory of literature,art and semiotics.This paper introduces the background and the editorial team of The Illustrated London News and determines the subjective factors of the content editing.Secondly,the paper uses the research methods of the Congyao Han,classifies the text content,and summarizes the image narrative characteristics of different types of image news.Based on the study of the text content,it is divided into a single image and a series of images according to the narrative mode of the image.The narrative plot of a single image is based primarily on the moment of the narrative.The best narration moments of different types of image news are not the same,and they should not blindly follow the laws of golden moments.The series of image narration relies on the superposition of successive moments to form a complete narrative context.The image narration cannot be separated from the text narration,and the imaginary image and the literal meaningcan form a complete narration.The narrative relationship of pictorial is mainly composed of explicit intertextual and implicit intertextuality.Explicit intertextuality refers to the external representation,and the "text" in this paper mainly refers to the foreign text and the instruction text inside the image.The text of the pictorial imitate the image which is actually referring to the internal conversion mechanism between the representative items,objects and the explanatory items in the study of Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotics.Of course,there is also an incomplete equivalence in the translation of image and text.And there is a certain tension between them.When the gap is expanding,the text and image will contradict each other and even become opposite.
