During the1920 s and 1930 s,many foreign journalists crowded into China to report news with different purposes.Considering the complex international background and its own needs, the Nanjing Nationalist Government used to hold complex attitudes towards these foreign journalists, which contained both surveillance and support.Figuring these out can not only let us know the differences between the management of the government towards the foreign journalists and Chinese journalists, but also can tell us how these managements were influenced by the external environment.By researching the memoirs and biographies of these foreign journalists,as well as some documents and papers during that period,I found that apart from the strict censorship, the Nanjing Nationalist Government also punished these foreign journalists by the prohibition of postage and deportation. However, the resistance and the extraterritoriality of the foreign journalists made these punishment difficult to implement. On the other hand, the Nanjing Nationalist Government also provided convenience to these journalists, hoping they could speak for the government to the international community.Behind these complex attitudes, there were the games among different interest groups and the helplessness of the government during that intricate and complex period. |
