In1924, Lin Yutang participate into the political comment ator writing with great political passion, however, when the early1930’s Lin began to advocate humor and natural style in his articles, he was subjected by the intense criticism from left writers. Lin Y utang had been involved as an editor and writer in several magazin es like Yu Si, Lun Yu, Ren Jian Shi, Yun Zhou Feng, in1936, Lin Yutang wrote the first history book about Chinese public opinion named A History of the Press and Public Opinion in China, in this book Lin recorded people’s struggle on the freedom of speech in ancient China. At that specific social and historical environment, Li n Yutang gradually formed his thoughts about freedom of the press based on practical activities on media.This thesis summed Lin Yutang’s thoughts about the freedom of the press from three sides, including his thoughts about the free dom of speech, his opposition on news censorship, how to achieve the freedom of the press, and Evaluate the historical contributions and limitations of his thoughts about the freedom of the press.Thoughts about the freedom of the press is the main compone nt of Lin’s media concept. It’s the creative development of the tho ughts on freedom of the press of West. Lin’s thoughts about the as pect of the natural rights, law in press still can be used for the cur rent press work.
