With the rapid development of microprocessor technology and the continuous improvement of computer processing speed, digital image processing has become a fiery field. Most of the important information of the image is reflected in the edge of the image, which is mainly reflected in the discontinuity of the local feature of the image. It is a place where the gray change in the image is relatively strong, that is,where the signal has undergone singular changes.Image edge detection has always been a difficult and hot topic in the field of image processing. This paper designs an FPGA-based edge detection system.Through the understanding and analysis of various edge detection algorithms, combined with the operating characteristics of FPGA,it finds the edge detection algorithm that is most suitable for FPGA,namely Sobel algorithm, and through mathematics. The derivation of the formula converts the algorithm into a form that is easily implemented in hardware description languages. Finally, the algorithm is converted into a hardware description language using Verilog language, and the sharpness of the image edge extraction is adjusted by setting a threshold value. This paper also uses the design of state machine and lookup table to write the OV7620 and SDRAM drive code to ensure that the system image capture and image cache work smoothly. The system has a simple structure and is directly connected to the VGA display through the FPGA,so that the experimental results are more obvious.Through repeated sampling operations, the feasibility of the design of this system was confirmed.
